Oil painting on linen

100 cm x 100 cm x 5.5cm

Framed in Tasmanian Oak

The peonies at the centre of this painting first entered my practice on a difficult yet ordinary day in 2023. I went for a walk and bought them almost without thought, simply hoping they might lift my mood. They became the subject of my first ‘successful’ painting and marked a breakthrough in my art practice. Since then, I have returned to paint them at least once each year.

Each time I return to them, the flowers take me back to that day. As I paint, I find myself reflecting on the person I was then, the uncertainty I felt, the big questions I faced, and everything that has changed since. No two paintings are the same. Each work is more developed, shaped by what I have learned and by the different person I have become. I love the first painting just as much as the most recent. The flowers remain familiar, returning me to the same memory, yet each time I see it a little differently. As I continue to change, so too does the memory, softening, deepening and shifting with time.
